What I’m about to say is going to be super controversial, but it IS the truth and it’s worth noting.
When you go back and look at the history of some of the biggest cults in the world, you’ll find one major theme that tends to repeat itself over and over again.
“The need to be noticed and feel understood.”
For me and you, it’s almost inconceivable that normal, everyday people would willing submit themselves to a cult and embed themselves so deeply in it just to be noticed and feel understood.
Heck, “some people” are even willing to die for the cult just to hold on to that feeling.
Sounds crazy, huh? …but we do it all the time.
I’m sure you’re thinking, “What? Chris you’re crazy! I would never belong to a cult.”
Well, let’s define “Cult”…
- a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
- a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
- a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.
So, as you can see, a “cult” can be anything from your local church, to your local Lions Club, a college football team, (Come on, you Aggies know you belong to a cult. lol), refusing to buy anything but Apple products, to satan worship to the Heavens Gate Cult where their leader Marshall Applewhite believed a UFO was going to pick them up and help them evolve into an evolutionary level “above human”.
The point is, “cults” can be almost any group or organization you belong to. (It’s not just in reference to something “satanic” as so many uneducated people believe).
Now, take into consideration that one of the main reasons why people “join” cults in the first place, is because they have a need to be noticed and feel understood. When you consider that, you begin to realize how you can build a loyal fan base of people that absolutely adore and respect you.
Have you ever had that “one patient” that just absolutely falls in love with your office and with chiropractic and has been with you forever?
You know what I’m talking about, right?
That one patient that gets so on fire for your office and for chiropractic that you even find yourself telling them, “You should be a chiropractor!’ or “Do you want a job?”
Well, what if you just had 15-20 patients like that?
What could that do for your practice?
Just as with any group or organization, people that fall head over heals for it, often report that for the first time in their lives, they felt fully noticed and understood by others.
Quick story: Since 2012 I’ve been pretty heavily involved in the network marketing industry. I’ve had a ton of success, making over six figures in the last 2 years combined. But here’s what I noticed about some of the most successful companies in the industry and most successful leaders…
Every One of Them Built A CULT-TURE .
Now here’s what is interesting…
Less than 4% of all “distributors/brand partners/affiliates” ever make a dime in network marketing. Yes, less that 4% !! …but some of these companies make hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars per year.
I mean, if people aren’t succeeding, why on God’s green earth, would they continue to stay in the company?
The biggest companies in network marketing have built a culture where their reps feel like they are noticed and understood.
They feel they are among “like minded people”.
As a matter of fact, they feel so noticed and understood that they won’t leave, even after 5 straight years of pure failure!
Again, because if they “leave the group” they will go back to being a nobody. They’ll go back to feeling misunderstood.
As a matter of fact, you see this taking place inside the chiropractic profession with some of the largest chiropractic coaching groups in the world employing this very strategy.
You join and all of sudden you become “important” because you belong to XYZ coaching, the largest coaching group in the world. You finally feel understood by your peers in the group and by the coaches themselves.
It happens in churches, support groups, organizations, secret societies, and so on and so forth.
It’s not a “bad” thing, even though that’s what our first thoughts lean towards. Being part of a group that notices you and understands you is a good thing, as long as the leader of that group doesn’t exploit the individuals of that group. There is nothing wrong with making people feel noticed and understood.
As a matter of fact, one of my good friends belongs to a Nutritional Based Network Marketing Company. He’s absolutely head over heals for the company. Seriously, it’s ALL he talks about. It can be really excessive at time. But he LOVES it. Just like I LOVE my Family, Chiropractic and Marketing. If you ever get a chance to talk to me, all you’ll hear me talk about is my family, chiropractic and marketing. I bet some of my friends think it’s excessive too! lol
But here’s what my friend Bobby recently told me,
“You know Chris, I’ve been in this company for 2 years and even though I’m not having a lot of success, this company has really helped me grow as a person. I read personal development books and listen to audio books every day. I’ve made a lot of new friends. I’ve surrounded myself with like minded, (goal oriented people) and I feel better equipped to take on bigger and better things in life. It’s helped me and my wife grow stronger in our relationship and overall, I just feel like a better person.”
Remember what a cult is?
- a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.
So “technically” speaking, my friend belongs to a cult. But is that a bad thing? In this case, “No.” It’s actually helping him become a better person. So what’s wrong with that? Should we chastise him for being in LOVE with what he does? No, not at all.
But how cool would it be to build a culture within your office walls and online where patients fall head over heals for you and help you spread your message of love and health across your town, your city, your state, your country or even across the globe?
Waaaaaaaayyyyy coooooool, right?
Well, you can do just that, and the first step is to make sure your patients feel noticed and understood.
Here’s some ideas to help you start implementing this psychological strategy.
#1. Create an army of chiropractic ambassadors.
Choose 15-20 of your BEST PATIENTS and invite them out to an Ambassador’s Dinner with you and your staff. YOU should start off the dinner by sharing your personal chiropractic story and then your staff should share theirs. Next, go around the table and have each patient share their personal testimonial at dinner as well. Then after everyone has shared their story, share your Mission and tell them the reason why you invited them to dinner and ask them if they would like to be an Official Ambassador To Your Office and then give them some “job requirements”.
For example, as an Ambassador they would need to….
- Like Your Facebook Page
- Following You On Instagram
- Follow You On Twitter
- Subscribe To Your YouTube Channel.
- Leave a Positive Review for you on Yelp and Google
Then, let them know that when you make a status update on your FB Business Page or other social media outlets, as an Ambassador to your office, you would ask of them to “SHARE” your content from your page to theirs.
If they agree with that, present them with a beautiful plaque or picture frame containing a certificate with their name on it and have your staff take a picture of you presenting the certificate to them.
Then post that shit to your social media pages and “tag” them. lol
It’s that simple!
As they come into your office on each visit, always hug them and tell them how much you appreciate them and bring up the topic of your latest status update or Instagram photo and ask them about their thoughts on it.
#2. Host more Patient Appreciation Days and be sure to acknowledge each and every patient by giving them a hug and telling them how much you enjoy having them in the office. (little gestures like that go a looooooong way!)

#3. Send them a personalized letter or just privately message them on facebook and remind them of what their health care goals are and how excited you are to be working with them.
For example, “Hey Kaitlynn, I hope you’re having an amazing day! I just wanted to let you know I really understand how bad your headaches have been affecting you the last 2 years. I am so happy that Shawna referred you to the office. I promise you, we’re gonna knock these headaches out of the park! 🙂 Me, you and the staff are going to be high fiving each other and celebrating very soon when these headaches are finally gone! I know some docs reading this will be like, “Oh my god, that is so unprofessional! “High Fiving”? ” “#BeastModeChiropractor”? “I would never…”
Well, it’s stuff like that, that helped my office see over 250 patient visits per week and generate over $700,000/year in gross revenue. So it’s up to you. You can be “right” or you can do what it takes to help more people and make more money.
Look, your patients are normal people, so talk to them like they’re normal people.
The important thing here is that we are BUILDING A CULTURE! …and this is just the tip of the iceberg, there are so many more things you can do!
